For couples we highly recommend By The Sea, surely one of the finest Bed & Breakfast units anywhere. You have private entrances, private baths, tv, refrigerators, and harbor views from every suite. You're right across the street from the Mayflower. Decor is Classic Pilgrim, meaning every piece of furniture you see, from Tiffany Lamps to oaken beds, looks like it might be a priceless antique. Lots and lots of big windows. Sitting on the front porch watching the sailboats out on the water is one of life's great experiences. Beautifully landscaped. Not more than two blocks from anything you want to do while in Plymouth. Your host is a retired English teacher.Reserve early, because many guests return every year and in Summers rooms are very hard to come by. $140 a night per suite.

Our favorite place to keep a youth group is the Governor Bradford Inn. We like the location right on the waterfront, literally looking out our front windows at the Mayflower, Provincetown ferry and fishing and whale watching boats. The outdoor pool is heated. There's no restaurant but there is a modest continental breakfast. If you're a family, children under 16 stay free with their parents. Rooms have been recently remodeled and are very nice, with refrigerators, full cable and other amenities. We like the central location within two blocks of the Pilgrim Museum, Old Grist Mill, Monument Hill, Plymouth Rock, all the good restaurants, fishing charter boats, ferry to Provincetown, whale watching cruises, and the Mayflower. We stay here in early June for $55 a room.

For families, or couples who don't like bed and breakfasts, we recommend the John Carver Inn, two blocks up Towne Brook from The Rock. It's a magnificent facility, with a great restaurant and "Pilgrim Cove," an indoor theme pool with an 80 ft. water slide winding around a model of the Mayflower, a full size heated swimming pool, and a hot tub. One great restaurant is within the facility, the Jenney Grist Mill is a block away, and the shops and restaurants of Main Street are just below you. Wireless Internet Access is available anywhere in the building. Some rooms have fire places and jacuzzis. Packages are available with admission to Plimouth Plantation, Wampanoa, the Mayflower, whale watching, the Provincetown Ferry, Pilgrim Museum, and charter fishing. 1-800-274-1620. www.JohnCarverInn.com. 25 Summer Street.
If the beach is a priority, or if you made arrangements in advance and know you will be spending all of your two or three days in one of the educational programs at Plimouth Plantation, then you might prefer to be adjacent to the plantation, right on the water. In such cases, we recommend Pilgrim Sands. The decks and terraces look right down on their private beach, even though they also offer indoor and outdoor heated pools. Bert's Cove Restaurant is just next door if you don't want to come all the way into town to eat. For anyone coming for a week or more, there are Crows Nest Suites, with living room, dining area, full kitchen, and panoramic views of Plymouth Harbor and Cape Cod Bay. If you come in early June, you can stay here for $114 a night. 1-800-729-7263. www.pilgrimsands.com.
If you want to camp, the best place near Plymouth is Myles Standish Homestead State Forest. This beautiful acreage occupies the land Standish staked out for himself in 1630 once the Pilgrims survived the first several Winters and were beginning to prosper. It remained in the family for 300 years before being donated to the State of Massachusetts, and today it is the largest publically owned recreation area in the system. There are five camping areas tucked into the forest or extending along four "kettle ponds," shallow bodies of water left over from the last ice age. No more than 6-8 feet deep in their centers and much shallower toward the edges, these ponds warm up better than the deeper ocean bays on either side, so make for excellent swimming. There are 15 miles of biking trails and 13 miles of hiking trails meandering through the cranberry bogs and forest, which is the most extensive pitch pine - scrub oak ecosystem left in North America. The kettle ponds are bordered by fine sand beaches. Canoeing and fishing are very common and there are 35 miles of horseback riding trails. The campsites are about 15 minutes out of Plymouth. Take Route 3A South, then Long Pond Road out to and under Route 3. Go 3 more miles and turn right. 1-508-866-2526.
