Colonial Coast

The Birthplace of America

Itinerary
Getting There
Plymouth
Salem
Boston
Lexington & Concord
No matter who you are, where you live,or what kind of group you're involved with, you have to go to Massachusetts. Even if you're only one person or one couple, you have to go. Massachusetts is where it all begins. Two weeks there is not the wild outdoor experience our other trips offer. But the hands on historical insight you come home with will change you. Never again will the Puritans, Mayflower, Paul Revere, Salem, the Colonial Period or American Revolution seem like dusty pages from the past. They will become part of you. Once you walk their decks, sit in their living rooms, eat in their restaurants and stand under sails with salt spray in your face, you will grasp what it was to be American in 1620 through 1776. We always find it amazing how the people of Massachusetts feel ownership of early American history. They talk about William Brewster, Paul Revere, John Hancock, the Sons of Liberty and the Minutemen as if they knew them, as if the 1700s were a few decades ago. And they protect the buildings, ships, roads and bridges from modern developers. Some of the more critical sites have federal protection, but hundereds of lesser ones are guarded by individuals, families or local societies, who raise their own money through small donations and lovingly polish and maintain priceless treasures with their own hands.

We urge you to make this trip in early June if possible. Earlier, many sites will not be open. Later, you'll be caught in the crush of school groups, Scout troops and tourist buses. Bring proper clothing for rain and cold, because over any two week period you're likely to experience at least one front moving in off the North Atlantic. You will notice in some of these pictures we are seen in cold, rainy weather.

For an early June trip, you should make reservations about two months ahead. For anything mid June through Labor Day you should make reservations four months ahead.

This will be an expensive trip, but we'll show you how to cut costs where possible. Camping and cooking, the usual strategies for saving money, are not options in Boston, and less than ideal at the other stops. You should be in the middle of things, and you cannot do that camped 20 miles away.

We recommend reading certain novels and watching certain films during the Winter and Spring before this trip. Schools have quit teaching early American history, and you need the background so what you see makes sense.
