There are several classic Rocky Mountain entrees you have to order while you're in the area: Elk, Bison and Antelope Steaks, Blueberry Pancakes, Trout, Huevos Rancheros, Western Omelettes, and various Stews and Soups. Cowboy Coffee tends to be pretty strong but a lot of people love it for its rich flavor.
Restuarants tend to fill up with hikers and fishermen at breakfast and dinner. If you're not one of those, you might try to go to breakfast late and dinner early to avoid the crush. Lunchtime is a lot less crowded because everyone is out on the trail.
There's a lot of turnover in local restaurants. Chefs move from one restaurant to the next, and from restaurants here to restaurants in Denver, Fort Collins or Boulder. So the quality and even the menu at a given restaurant changes from one Summer to the next. If you're staying at a lodge, ask your host for advice. If you're camping, ask someone at the campground desk.
Service here is a constant issue. Moat wait staff are either college students or Eastern Europe H-1 Visa trainees. Just relax and expect to wait, for a menu, your meal, the bill. |
