Lodging at Timberline begins with Timberline Lodge, a slopeside facility with balconies facing the mountain. It is shown above left and here at right. As you can see, the lodge is not large and reservations, especially for weekends, must be made well in advance. It is steps away from the main lodge and right at the base of the south slopes.

There is also a great youth group facility, Sitzmark Lodge, on the opposite side of the main lodge. It offers bunk beds, meals, equipment rentals and lessons for very affordable rates. For 20 years, Scouts, schools, church youth groups and other organizations have come to Timberline every year thanks to this package. Included in the cost is the chance to earn the skiing merit badge.

A second option, especially for groups but also for couples or families, is the Windwood Lodge. This is an odd little resort. It sits right at the base of the mountain, and you can look out the restaurant’s picture window or from your room and watch skiers descending the Timberline slopes. But you have to drive three miles around to get to it, as there is no direct road access to the mountain.

Windwood is a rambling log lodge facing an air strip and another dozen rental chalets. One wing is a dorm style bunkhouse for groups (see photo top right). A fine restaurant can tailor meals for your group, including special servings for late arrivals. A small bar with pool table and dartboard occupies a niche down the hall. And there’s even a telescope for you to check out the slope conditions while you wait for your food. But this place has a loyal following. A cancellation might open up a single room once the season starts, but you need to book a group back in the Fall.

Another option is Canaan Valley Lodge five miles South in Canaan Valley State Park. This is the premier facility in the area. You have hotel type rooms, a great restaurant (The Aspen Room), hot tub, beautiful indoor heated pool, fitness room, ice skating rink, and deer grazing outside your window. There are also a dozen log cabins across the parking lot if you’d like a little more privacy. They run a shuttle to the slopes and there are package deals available. The photo at right was obviously taken in the Summer, but its surroundings are just as scenic in the Winter.
Blackwater Falls State Park Lodge is three miles north at the edge of the town of Davis. Shown left in Summer, the lodge is very upscale and is located in a beautiful forested setting. If you have your own cross country skiis, you can usually use them in the state park. The falls itself is spectacular in Winter if you can get to it.

The Village Inn is another option. On Route 32, four miles from Canaan Valley, it offers 18 rooms, four apartments and two chalets. There is no restaurant on premises, but several are a few steps away.

The other choice along the base of the mountain is the Deerfield Village Resort. They have condos, townhouses and rooms. See photo at right.

Three away in the town of Davis are the Best Western Alpine Lodge, Davis Inn, and Mountain Aire Lodge.

If you enjoy bed and breakfast accommodations, try the Bright Morning Inn, Meyer House, and Hill House, all in Davis.

Your final option would be to rent a chalet right along the slopes. Timberline has a whole village of these extending up the mountain along the left and right flanks. For a large family or small group they could be ideal. The price would be slightly higher than just renting a room, but the full kitchens would allow you to cook meals in, which, especially over several days, would add up to a large savings and more than compensate for the higher rate. The location would allow everyone to come and go during the day and not require adults to shuttle a van back and forth, or require everyone to arrive and leave at the same time.
