We just love Williamsburg. We think Congress should mandate that every American high school bring its students to certain special places and this is on the short list. There is a LOT to see here, enough to occupy students for a week. But "Williamsburg" encompasses more than the Historic District. Once here, you also need to spend at least half a day at Jamestown and half a day at Yorktown. And a few miles away, there are even more attractions. There's the famous Virginia Plantation District, the Norfolk Navy Base, the Big Dismal Swamp, which George Washington owned and hoped to make into a timbering operation, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. You can even make a strong argument for a day at Busch Gardens, one of the nation's top amusement parks with its nationality districts. And for you teachers, scoutmasters and parents, the park service has educational packets prepared which you can order ahead of time so your kids will come prepared to make the most of their visit. You could wrap a whole semester course around a one week visit here, spending nine weeks studying before you came and nine weeks after you got back home. |
