Outpost is America's oldest adventure travel magazine and its oldest adventure travel website. The website's thousand pages contain information and photos to help you plan day, weekend or two week trips. Coverage includes hiking, canoeing, backpacking, rafting, skiing, amusement parks, historical sites, cities, national parks, Amtrak and even Route 66. Details on lodging, restaurants, trails, rivers, slopes, rides, beaches and other features are included.

This is an American travel site. Keeping up with the trails, parks, cities, wilderness areas, historical sites, rivers, ski resorts and railroads within the U.S. is a massive job. We don't have the time or resources to cover the rest of the world.

70% of our readers live in the seven Ohio Valley states, so directions start from there and we focus on trails, rivers, parks and trips within that region.

Our equipment reviews keep this region in mind, too. They factor in the humidity, heat and rain that are constant factors in this part of the country. Tents, shoes and rain gear have to breathe to be usable here.

Unlike many web sites, we never evaluate anything we have not personally experienced, be it trails, rivers, slopes, rides, lodging, restaurants or beaches. And we return to these sites annually, to keep the information as up to date as possible.

This sometimes becomes an issue in reviewing products. If a company declines to send us one of their items for review, we do not review it. We're not taking somebody else's word when it comes to equipment.

This is not a site where readers post their own reviews. While that is an easy way to create content in a hurry, it is not reliable. You don't know who the people are. The internet is filled with restaurants, motels, guide services and others paying their employees to go to those sites and post negative reviews of their rivals and glowing reviews of their own businesses. Here, you can get to know us, then read our reviews confident that we are very consistent in what we're looking for and what we dislike. Over the years we have earned readers' trust.
