Our hotel recommendations for Washington begin and end with The Harrington. This grand old establishment just off Pennsylvania Avenue has hosted kings, queens, royalty of all kinds, military leaders and other dignitaries from every continent. At one time, it was the state of the art lodging in Washington. Over a century, other hotels have been built with bigger rooms, more amenities and fancier lobbies until today The Harrington no longer sees such distinguished guests. So it has been repackaged as the hotel for families, youth groups and anyone wanting to see Washington on a reasonable budget. You are in the heart of DC, just off The Mall, within walking distance of the White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Capitol Building, Smithsonian Museums and all the other Mall attractions. The Harrington has a parking garage so your vehicle is off the street under supervision. There are two restaurants in the hotel and you are surrounded by 27 more within a block one way in various directions. Rooms here may no longer be considered opulent, but they are quite nice. Yes, they're small. But they're comfortable, and they have the same tv, wireless internet, coffee machines and other frills that other hotels offer. You're not coming here to spend all day in your room. You're going to spend your time seeing the city, and here you're right in the middle of everything you want to see. We have stayed at The Harrington for years, as individuals, as a family, and with school and Scout groups, and we have never had a bad experience. We like eating breakfast just off the lobby at Harriet's, and if we arrive tired and don't feel like walking far, we can eat dinner at Harry's at the other side of the lobby. There's the usual gift shop, and we like our morning Washington Post. We feel extremely safe in this neighborhood.
