There are not many restaurants along Pine Mountain and most of them are associated with lodging facilities. This is a remote, rural area and food tends to be basic, traditional Southern / Appalachian / American. There are very few ethnic restaurants or ethnic items on regular menus. You're in Fried Chicken, Bean Soup, Catfish, Steak & Potatoes and Sausage country. However, this doesn't mean the food isn't good. It is often very good, reminiscent of the 1950s when restaurants served homemade meals at reasonable prices. Just don't expect alcoholic beverages, since the counties are dry. Don't expect clever 21st Century chefs. And don't expect highly themed decors. Instead, enjoy down home cooking, friendly waitresses and magnificent views out the windows. Learn to appreciate Sweet Iced Tea and Lemonade. And save room for dessert. These ladies know how to make a Pie.

The photo at right looks due West along the spine of Pine Mountain. Off to the left (South) it drops toward Cumberland Mountain and Virginia. To the right (North) it drops to the Kingdom Come Plateau. In the foreground you can see the faint break in the trees of the Pine Mountain Trail. This photo is in Letcher County.
