You need to decide on the type of trip you prefer. If you're bringing a Scout group, obviously the Scout camp guided expedition offers many advantages, and the BSA Base has its own cabins for those taking its trips. If you're bringing a family, a couple, a nonScout group, or two or more guys and you want a real wilderness canoeing experience, you need to call one of the outfitters in Ely. They work with nearby motels and can set you up with a room the night before you leave and the night after you return. But for most people, we recommend renting a cabin for a week or two, to be used as a basecamp for daytrips and overnights. Cabins line the southern shore of Burntside Lake and several other lakes. Groups of them are labelled "camps" or "lodges." Each is a superb example of its kind of lodging. They are also historic, beginning before 1920. For youth groups, hard core fishermen or canoeists, or anyone on a tight budget, we recommend Camp Van Vac. It's not luxurious, but it's a step up from camping. For couples or families wanting more upscale comfort and willing to pay for it, Burntside Lodge or the YMCA Camp are the way to go. The middle ground can be found at the other "lodges" or "camps." If you prefer camping, we list the best of those options.
