The iconic Old Faithful Lodge is not usable durting the Winter. It makes for gorgeous photos, but it's not well insuilated and would cost a fortune to heat. So when national park officials decided to open Yellowstone to overnight visitors in the Winter, they built Old Faithful Snow Lodge & Cabins. The lodge and cabins are cozy, comfortable and warm. There's a restaurant, snack bar and gift shop. Remember, though, that Winters in Yellowstone have become huge vacation favorites, so you need to call early, no later than September, to get reservations. snow lodge
Bozeman Holiday Inn If you're flying into Bozeman, you'll stay here, since this is where the shuttle to Mammoth will pick you up the next day. This is a great Holiday Inn, with a very good restaurant and a large indoor heated pool. There's a free shuttle from the airport. Montana State University is nearby. If you're staying here, you might catch a Big Sky Conference basketball game. Not only do Yellowstone visitors fill this, but visiting sports teams and their fans stay here because of its proximity to the airport and the MSU campus.
The Mammoth Hotel faces Mammoth Hot Springs, a spectacular series of travertine terraces steaming in the cold Winter air. This is where you transfer from the Bozeman shuttle to the Yellowstone Snow Coach. You may end up spending a night here on the way into or out of the park. Indeed, many people spend a week here and see no need to go further. You can cross country ski, snowshoe and snowmobile from here. There are half day and all day Snow Coach tours to Yellowstone Canyon, Yellowstone Falls, Geyser Basin and Hayden Valley. Rooms here are fine and about to get better; the hotel faces a year long total renovation in 2016-2017. There's an outstanding restaurant here and a nice gift shop. You could spend several days just watching and taking photos of willdlife, especially Buffalo, Elk and Wolves, which have little fear of people and wander across parking lots, roads, yards and sidewalks. Like everywhere else at Yellowstone, you must call early for reservations. Mammoth Hotel
Lexington Inn If you're coming in through Jackson we recommend the Lexington Inn. It's just off the town square, so you can walk to a dozen restaurants. It has an indoor heated pool and lots of amenities in the rooms. Your Scenic Safari shuttle picks up passengers right here. There's a free airport shuttle and a shuttle to Teton Village and the Jackson Hole Ski Resort. This is a long time Jackson landmark but it's recently been renovated and had a wing of new rooms added. Very popular with skiiers, snow mobilers and snowshoers, so you have to call early for reservations.
